German philosopher Ludwig Andreas Feuerbach wrote “Man is what he eats”. With this, he was bringing attention to the fact that the food one intakes has a direct bearing on their state of mind and health.
At Annamrita, our beliefs are based on the same thought process of how the intake of any food grants the eater not only with nutritious and strength, but also offers him values of culture and of partaking in the divine, for which he strives in his innermost self.
The genesis of our program lies in a simple incident back in 1974 when founder of ISKON Srila Prabhupada noticed a group of village children fighting with street dogs over scraps of food. Deeply troubled by what he saw, he told his disciples no one within a ten mile radius of ISKCON temples should go hungry.
When the Government of India launched the strategic Midday Meal Scheme in 1994, ISKCON Food Relief Foundation saw a great opportunity to support needy children by providing them with the right nutrition to supplement their education and in turn help fight two of the most pressing problems of India, malnutrition and Illiteracy. This charitable work also helped them serve the decree of their founder and spread his vision far and wide.
